Stermy takes 2nd and 3rd place at QuakeCon - a summery
Tuesday, August 24th 2010 at 11:17:48 AM
QuakeCon, one of the most prestigious Quake Live events in the world, has commenced from August 12th - 15th. As you might have seen or expected, Alessandro "Stermy" Avallone was there, attending in both the duel and CTF tournament.

To start of with the duel tournament, Stermy was placed in the upper part of the winners bracket. It contained 32 of the world's elite gamers, hailing from all over the world. In the first round, Alessandro was rewarded a free win due to his high seed, but after that the action kicked off. First off he had to face sparks, but the Canadian proved to be little trouble for Stermy, as he cruised through to the next round with 2:0 overall.

Up next however, the first real challenge awaited, DaHanG. The American number two player had already easily disposed whaz in the second round, after winning a BYE in the first. Again, Stermy won the match with 2:0.

Then the semi finals followed. SK Gaming's rapha had been playing strong so far, beating Flysher and dkt. But Stermy had already proven to be strong against the American, being one of the first in a while to beat him, this happened at ESWC. But this was a new tournament, so history did not matter. The first map was dm13, and Alessandro took it with the comfortable of 11:8. The next map was t7 and this was again rather easily won by Stermy, 7:4.

The victory over rapha brought Alessandro into the upper bracket final of QuakeCon. Here he would face arguably the current best Quaker of the world: Cypher. The Belarusian superstar had been on a role, defeating top favorites such as Spart1e and strenx without much trouble. But now he had to face Stermy.

Unfortunately enough, Stermy did not pull the longest straw and thus could not stop Cypher's incredible run. The first map, t7, was easily won by Cypher, with 11:2. However, Stermy proved to be no push over, beating Cypher with 14:3 on ztn. The final map, Aerowalk, had to decide it all; who would enter the final? As mentioned before, Cypher pulled the longest straw and won the final map with 13:7, pushing Alessandro down into the lower bracket.

In the lower bracket final Stermy had to face Cooller to secure a spot in the Grand Final versus Cypher. The Russian had fought his way through the lower bracket, defeating players such as strenx, rapha and Spart1e. In the match between the Italian and the Russian, Stermy started off strong. He took Aerowalk quite comfortably with 16:7. But in the end this was not enough. Cooller won the other two maps, dm13 and t7, with 17:4 and 4:2 respectively.

This was not the only silverware Alessandro won though, as he also participated in the CTF tournament with Team FnaticMSI. The Italian and the other Europeans were on a roll, beating Trill and Loaded to get to the Grand Final. Here they met Evil Geniuses, the team who knocked out FnaticMSI last year. Unfortunately enough for the Europeans, history repeated. Evil Geniuses won the match with 2:1 overall, placing Stermy's FnaticMSI on a second place.

Overall Alessandro "Stermy" Avallone showed a strong performance, grabbing silver and bronze. He has also uploaded some "goodies" for his fans. His latest config (here) and the QuakeCon demo's (here) are now available in the download section!
